My painting Autoritratto was selected for the historic Phillips Mill Exhibition in New Hope, PA.
It is an honor to have my work shown in the same venue as notable Bucks County artists Edward Redfield, John Folinsbee, Daniel Garber, Fern Coppedge, and Walter Baum !

I will also be participating in the meet the artist series at the Mill, the show runs through October 29, 2011.

5th Annual Arts in the Garden Tour

On Saturday May 21 I will be doing an alla prima portrait demo at the 5TH ANNUAL ARTS IN THE GARDEN TOUR in Langhorne, PA. My location will be in the Richardson House gardens from 12-4pm at the corner of Bellevue and Maple Avenues. I will also have small original oil paintings for sale along with some of my studio paintings & drawings. If you are in the area stop by and say hello!
Tickets are available on the day of the Tour at Langhorne Heritage Farm, 222 N. Green Street in Langhorne Borough, or in advance at Judy's Corner Frame Shop and Will Travel on S. Bellevue Avenue.

TRENTON CITY MUSEUM OPENING

Well, I still have only a couple of photos of the painting "La Vie en Rose" and the opening. Here I am with the Director & President of the Museum. It was a rather large affair with tons of people, food & wine along with an impressive show of fine art. It was nice to meet and talk with so many collectors and artists that share the same enthusiasm for the work. A great time was had by all at the opening, ........and the after party !

29th Ellarslie Open

My oil painting "La Vie en Rose" won the Ben Whitmire Purchase Award at the 29th Ellarslie Open. This painting will now become part of the Trenton City Museum's permanent collection. I am very honored to receive this prestigious award.

The museum is located in Ellarslie Mansion, an Italianate villa built in 1848. The mansion is the centerpiece of Cadwalader Park, which was designed by the famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, whose most famous work is New York City's Central Park.

The show is up until June 12.

I am always interested in seeing how a piece of art is created. The medium used is not important to me. What I love to see is the process, the steps one takes to arrive at that final work of art. I have started documenting my most recent painting. I usually work from life, for this portrait that was not possible. The model is a homeless man that I photographed on the streets of Philadelphia. He actually posed for me. I think this painting is off to a good start considering my reference material is not the most ideal. I began painting the same way I would if I was working from life. In the early stages of the painting the marks are more abstract and general, they are more about getting the energy of the subject rather than an exact likeness. As the painting progresses it will become more refined. The following images show my painting process.

The above oil paintings on Mylar have been included in this year's Trenton City Museum and Salon at Artworks shows. These are not the best shots, so go see them in person! The Ellarslie opening is April 25th from 5pm-9pm. The Salon at Artworks opening is on May 8th from 5pm-9pm. Both shows are up until June.

These paintings are from a series that I have been working on over the last two months. I will be posting more images here as well as my website.

LA PENTOLA DELL’ORO

This is a small but amazing restaurant located just a half block from the apartment. We sort of stumbled upon it and gave it a try. We had incredible food that was unlike any Italian meal that I had ever tasted. Each dish had unusual ingredients that worked very well together.

Tuscan dishes from the medieval and renaissance time periods inspire the food.
For Giuseppe Alessi and his chefs, cooking is more than just mixing ingredients together. Cooking is a work of art, closely connected to the culture of the people and it’s sensitivity towards the environment.

BASILICA OF SAN MINIATO AL MONTE

Last Sunday I spent the afternoon traveling on foot to San Miniato. I also stopped along the way at the Piazzale Michelangelo, which sits high above the city. The views are just incredible! Form this point you can see all of Florence and the surrounding Tuscan countryside.

I traveled out of the city center and across the Arno and entered the San Niccolo area. This part of town is low key with an “artsy” flare. There are many nice restaurants (even found a Jamaican Disco), beautiful homes, and some art studios. There is a very interesting mixed media atelier d’arte called La Bottega Del Presepe. Inside the studio were bits and pieces of religious artifacts, old photos, doll parts, and found objects. All of these parts had been reassembled into unique works of art.

It was a beautiful day that was not too hot and was also a great workout!

The façade of San Miniato is made of white and green marble dating from the 11th / 13th centuries, typical of the Romanesque style in Tuscany. On this site bishop Ildebrando found remnants of bone under the “holy gate”, in what is believed to be Florence’s first Christian cemetery. When entering through the basilica portal, which signifies for Florence the “gate of heaven”, the floor is covered in a geometric pattern of marble mosaic executed in 1207. There is a stunning zodiac with a stylized image of the sun at the center. This two color marble mosaic leads to the 15th century altar that was designed by Michelozzo. Inside of the church is the Chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal, built between 1461 and 1466. He was a Lusitanian clergyman who died at a young age in Florence in 1459. His body is in a marble tomb that has elaborate sculptures of angels, the Virgin Mary, and baby Jesus. Antonio and Bernardo Rossellino sculpted all of the figures. There are large frescos by Spinello Aretino painted with a narrative style typical of the Giotto tradition.

The church is lit mainly with natural light, and lots of candles. It is clear that not much has changed over the years at San Miniato. You feel like you are stepping back in time, when you hear the Benedictine monks (who still live there on the hill) begin their daily celebration of Vespers and Eucharist with Gregorian chant that fill the one thousand year old basilica.

Walking out of the doors of this impressive structure, you are presented with a breathtaking view of the skies of Florence. On the hillside, at that location, you can almost reach out and touch the clouds.

A PORTRAIT OF FLORENCE

After being here almost 10 days there is still so much to do and see. The amount of art that is just out on the streets and part of the everyday landscape is remarkable.

This morning I was out and about by 7:30AM to take photos and sketch. The temperature was actually very cool and the city quiet, the street vendors were just setting up and not many people were out.

So, I took the opportunity to go to some typical tourist spots before the tours groups converged. I think I ended up getting some nice photos.

Later today I am planning on going up to San Miniato. The monks that live there still do the vespers in Gregorian chant everyday in the early evening. Our museum tour guide, who is an art historian and an art conservator, recommended it. It is located across the Arno all the way at the top of the hillside overlooking all of Florence. It sounds like a very special place, a nice way to spend a Sunday.

PLANE, TRAINS, TAXI, AND A WALK

Today I arrived in Florence, Italy. It was a long trip, but well worth it. I left on a plane from Philadelphia, then took two trains in Rome -one of them was to baggage claim, the other one, called the "Leonardo Express", took me to Termini Station in Rome. It was there that I took a high speed train to Florence S.M.N Station. I decided to catch a cab because the bus situation was a little confusing.

I was treated to a high speed chase type of ride through the narrow streets of Florence to my hotel. My cab driver who seemed nice, drove very fast and then came to a stop within about two inches of what ever was in front of him. We almost hit four scooters (you know, the kind with people actually driving them), and a tour bus full of people that was parked blocking the end of a street.

During this energizing ride, my cab driver also gave me a sort of mini tour of Florence, calling out, pointing and then whizzing past.. "Ponte Vecchio, Pitti Palace, Santo Spirito, and ended with Hotel Silla ! "

I arrived, checked in, took a shower and got changed. Then I went for a walk. The following photos are some things I saw along my way. I took 22 photos.

I am having trouble with my internet connection here. I'm not sure how often I will be able to post to this blog. Once I can I will add photos.......I'll try one more time.

Yeah, it worked.

THE NEW STUDIO

Here are a few photos of my new studio so far. I could not be more pleased with this space.........lots of work but well worth it. It took us about two solid months of demo work, (taking down walls, ceilings, doorways and lots of wood beams, etc.) to get the space ready to paint and for the move from my previous studio. I am still in the process of adding lighting as well as a fan. I only wish that I had taken some "before" photos of the space, which used to be two bedrooms a closet and an attic. I will add more photos as I fine tune this new studio - L'Atelier.
